Safe
Effective Herbal Ingredients
We only included ingredients in our review where we found multiple
scientific studies vs. anecdotal evidence that support it's positive
effect on the various functions that are important to produce a
strong full erection, increase libido and treat impotence issues.
This is not to say that other herbs are not effect, only that we
have scientific research backing the ones listed.
Shilajit (Viagra Effect)
The anti-stress and adjuvant effects have been evaluated in a number
of India studies. Shilajit is found to provide an anti-oxidant
defense against several reactive oxygen types. Processed Shilajit
provided complete protection to methacrylate against hydroxyl
radical induced polymerization and acted as a reversible nitric
oxide-captodative agent. These findings are consistent with the
therapeutic uses of Shilajit as an Ayurvedic (rejuvenator)
against oxidative stress and geriatric complaints of erectile
dysfunction.
Horny Goat Weed (Viagra Effect)
Horny goat weed contains a prominent flavonoid called icariin.
Icariin is a cGMP-specific PDE5 inhibitor like Viagra, Cialis and
Levitra. This was demonstrated in a 1984 University of Peking
study which concluded: "Icariin is a cGMP-specific PDE5
inhibitor that can be developed into an oral effective agent for the
treatment of ED."
Horny goat weed has been used for for over 2000 years as an sexual
and reproductive tonic. It's acts in multiple ways to increase
erection ability, size, and fullness.
Besides it's PDE-5 inhibitor characteristics it also has positive
effects on the endocrine system functioning as an adaptogen by
increasing levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and
dopamine when they are low - promoting energy, but reduces cortisol
levels when they are elevated (an anti-stress effect). High stress
conditions, increase cortisol levels causing fatigue and depressing
sex drive.
It also helps restore low levels of both testosterone and thyroid
hormone back to normal - improving sex drive.
Muira Puama
This South American herb has been used for centuries to treat a weak
libido and erectile dysfunction. Two recent French studies supported
it's effect treating impotence.
In one study, men treated with muira puama extract 62% reported that
it had a dynamic effect on their libido and 51% with erectile
dysfunction said that it was beneficial.
In a second study, muira puama extract was given to 100 men with
sexual asthenia. 85% of the men reported an increase in libido and
90% reported an increased ability to maintain an erection.
Allium Sativum - Garlic (Viagra Effect)
Yes, Good old garlic. In two different 1998 studies one from the
National University of Mexico and another from the Institute of
Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy, Munich, Germany show garlic
to "activate nitric oxide synthase" or enhance the nervous
systems ability to react to nitric oxide.
Also there are multiple studies compiled at the Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Institute which demonstrate Garlic’s assistance in both
preventing and having curative effects on several medical conditions
which are often the cause of ED. These include high blood pressure,
heart disease, hypertension and atherosclerosis.
Mucuna Pruriens
Mucuna Pruriens works as a prolactin inhibitor, a growth hormone
stimulant and to increase testosterone.
A U.S. patent was filed in 2002 on the use of mucuna pruriens to
stimulate the release of growth hormone in humans. The high levels
of l-dopa in the mucuna seed are converted to dopamine which
stimulates the release of growth hormone by the pituitary gland.
L-dopa and dopamine are effective prolactin inhibitors.
Increased levels of prolactin are considered responsible for 70% of
erection failure in males. In one study, oral intake of the seeds in
56 human males was able to improve erection, duration of coitus,
and post-coital satisfaction after only four weeks of treatment.
It also has alsopromots spermatogenic effects in men, improving
sperm count and motility.
Tribulus Terrestris
Tribulus is a natural testosterone enhancer. It is also said to
be an excellent circulatory system tonic and can help build muscles
and strength.
Clinical studies on the sexual activity-enhancing effect of tribulus
have shown the herb to contain protodioscin, a saponin constituent,
improving libido in men with impotence due to various causes; libido
in women with menopausal symptoms; and sperm motility in infertile
and subfertile men.
In another study involving 59 men, ages 22-67, suffering from a
range of sexual dysfunctions. An increase of sexual desire and
fantasies, as well as sexual self-confidence, were reported in
almost all of the patients. The subjective experience of
pleasure, joy and satisfaction was reported in 80% of the men;
erection improved in over 75% of the men; and the duration
of intercourse before ejaculation was prolonged in 25% of the
men.
Ashwagandha
Here is what the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center had to say in
their Ashwagandha Clinical Summary.
"It (Ashwagandha) is also used as a general tonic, to increase
energy and improve health and longevity... Ashwagandha has been
shown to exhibit antioxidant effects in the brain and to have a
tranquilizing effect on the central nervous system in animals...
Human study's suggest Ashwagandha may promote growth in children and
improve hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count and sexual
performance in adults."

Herbal Ingredients
That Support Overall Male Health and Prevent/Help ED Causing
Conditions
There are multiple causes of sexual dysfunction and low sex drive
which may range from mild (low sex drive, weak erections, lack of
energy, slow and weak ejaculation) to severe (total inability to
achieve erection and complete lack of sexual desire).
|
These include:
- Cardiovascular (i.e. restricted
blood flow, high blood pressure, heart disease, hypertension and
atherosclerosis)
- Renal or urological
- Nutritional (i.e. malnutrition,
vitamin or mineral deficiency)
- Endocrine (i.e. low testosterone
or high prolactin)
- Neurological
- Psychological (i.e. stress,
anxiety, etc.)
By increasing your health in the
above areas you are often able resolve sexual dysfunction issues.
This is perhaps where the greatest benefit that natural herbal
supplements provide to a mans total sexual performance.
Minimal - Ingredients provide
primarily support for an erection, but limited benefits in other
important areas.
Moderate - Ingredients provide some additional benefits to
the other ED related conditions and overall health.
Significant - Ingredients
provide significant preventative/help benefits for other ED causing
conditions and overall male health.
Potentially Dangerous
Ingredients
We reviewed the ingredients in each of the supplements and cross
checked the ingredients against ingredients identified by the FDA as
"Supplement Ingredients With Concerns" The one ingredient
on this list Yohimbe is considered dangerous and is contained
in some of the products reviewed.
|

Injuries Associated With the Use of Selected Dietary Supplements"
Yohimbe (Pausinystalia yohimbe)
Yohimbe is a tree bark containing a variety of pharmacologically
active chemicals. It is marketed in a number of products for body
building and "enchanced male performance." Serious adverse
effects, including renal failure, seizures and death, have been
reported to FDA with products containing yohimbe and are currently
under investigation.
The major identified alkaloid in yohimbe is yohimbine, a chemical
that causes vasodilation, thereby lowering blood pressure. Yohimbine
is also a prescription drug in the United States. Side effects are
well recognized and may include central nervous system stimulation
that causes anxiety attacks. At high doses, yohimbine is a monoamine
oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. MAO inhibitors can cause serious adverse
effects when taken concomitantly with tyramine-containing foods
(e.g., liver, cheeses, red wine) or with over-the-counter (OTC)
products containing phenylpropanolamine, such as nasal decongestants
and diet aids. Individuals taking yohimbe should be warned to
rigorously avoid these foods and OTC products because of the
increased likelihood of adverse effects.
Yohimbe should also be avoided by individuals with hypotension
(low blood pressure), diabetes, and heart, liver or kidney disease.
Symptoms of overdosage include weakness and nervous stimulation
followed by paralysis, fatigue, stomach disorders, and ultimately
death.
|
Our recommendation is to avoid any
product containing Yohimbe. There are many other alternative
ingredients that have proven effective and are safe. If you are
considering using such a product only use it after consulting your
doctor and under their strict supervision.
In the products reviewed, Orexis and VirilityEX
Contain Yohimbe. In fact
VirilityEx contains 450mg of Yohimbe.
Other Factors
Product Guarantee
It is important that any manufacturer stand behind their product
with a money back guarantee. The fact is that depending on the
individual and the condition(s) that may be causing ED, various
ingredients and formulations may work better than others.
Made in The US
By purchasing only from companies that only manufacture their
product in the US you can help insure that the ingredients are as
labeled. Most of the supplements that have had other substances
added (such as sildenafil citrate) have been manufactured outside of
the US by unscrupulous companies.
Check to make sure that the supplement is manufactured in the US and
not just a US company that imports their product from abroad. The
Vinarol recall is a recent example of this occurring.
Known FDA Complaints or Recall for the
Specific Product
We checked to see if there are any known product complaints or
recalls registered with the FDA for each of the products reviewed.
Potential Misleading Claims
Because we do expect companies to shine a positive light on their
product, we try to give they the benefit of the doubt on subjective
information. However if a claim is made that is clearly mis-leading
based on other factual evidence it is graded as a potentially mis-leading
statement.
Both Orexis and Virility EX make strong safety claims when medical
evidence supports the danger of Yohimbe. Yohimbe is not recommended
by doctors who are skilled in alternative and complementary medicine
and can be toxic.
|
|
"Yohimbe is not recommended
because it has a very narrow therapeutic index. There is a
relatively small dosing range, below it the herb doesn’t work and
above it the herb is toxic. Side effects of normal dosages include
dizziness, anxiety, hyperstimulation, and nausea. As little as 40 mg
a day can cause a severe drop in blood pressure, abdominal pain,
fatigue, hallucinations, and paralysis." Source: Natural
Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction, Cathy Wong, N.D. |
| |
Orexis gets better marks because they
do warn " ***Additionally: Do not take Orexis™ if you suffer from
high blood pressure or currently take any form of MAO Inhibitors."
The combination of MAO inhibitors and Yohimbe can be deadly.
Recommendations
While all both products include a variety of ingredients that have
been shown to be effective for Impotence, we cannot recommend Orexis
because they use potentially dangerous Yohimbe.
The only product that we in this review is Zenerx.
